How to write a scientific article

Almost every empirical paper follows the same skeleton, known as IMRaD: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. Editors read in that order because it answers four questions in sequence — why did you do this, what did you do, what happened, and what does it mean. Write to that logic and reviewers can follow you effortlessly.

Introduction — narrow the funnel

Open with the broad problem, move to what is already known, then name the specific gap your study fills. End with a single sentence stating your aim or hypothesis. Three or four paragraphs is usually enough; a literature review belongs in a review article, not here.

Methods — write for replication

The test is simple: could a competent researcher in your field repeat this study from your description alone? Give instrument models, software versions, sample sizes, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and your statistical tests. Name your ethics approval and its reference number.

Results — report, don't interpret

State what you found, in the order your aims were listed. Every table and figure should be self-explanatory and mentioned in the text — but never repeat a whole table in prose. Report exact p-values and effect sizes rather than only "significant". Save all meaning-making for the Discussion.

Discussion — answer your own question

Begin by answering the question you posed in the Introduction. Then compare with previous work, explain surprises, and state your limitations honestly — reviewers trust a paper that names its own weaknesses far more than one that pretends to have none. Close with what should happen next.

Write the abstract last. It is a miniature of the finished paper — background, method, key result with numbers, conclusion — and you cannot summarise a paper you have not yet written. The title and abstract are the only parts most people will ever read, so give them the time they deserve.

How to avoid plagiarism

Plagiarism is presenting someone else's words, ideas, data or images as if they were your own. Most cases we see are not dishonesty — they are careless note-taking, or a genuine belief that changing a few words is enough. It isn't.

The four kinds that get papers retracted

Verbatim copying

Text lifted word for word without quotation marks and a citation. Even with a citation, a direct quotation still needs quotation marks.

Patchwriting

Swapping synonyms while keeping the original sentence structure. Screening tools catch this easily, and so do reviewers who know the field.

Self-plagiarism

Reusing your own previously published text without citing it. Your earlier paper is a published work like any other — cite it.

Data and image reuse

Republishing figures, tables or gels from another paper — including your own — without permission and attribution.

How to paraphrase properly

Read the passage, close the source, and write the idea from memory in your own sentence structure. Then reopen the source to check you have the facts right — and cite it. If you find yourself looking at the original while typing, you are copying, not paraphrasing.

What a similarity score actually means

Screening tools report the percentage of your text that matches other sources. There is no magic safe number. A 25% score made up of method boilerplate, standard phrases and correctly quoted references may be fine; a 8% score that is one uncited paragraph from someone else's discussion is misconduct. Editors read the report, not just the number.

Understanding the h-index

Your h-index is h when you have published h papers that have each been cited at least h times. If you have 12 papers cited 12 or more times, your h-index is 12 — no matter how many other papers you have, and no matter whether one of them was cited 900 times.

What it measures well

It rewards sustained, consistently used work rather than a single lucky hit, and it cannot be inflated by publishing a lot of ignored papers. That is why hiring and promotion committees like it.

What it hides

Why your h-index differs between databases

Google Scholar indexes preprints, theses, book chapters and conference papers, so it usually gives the highest number. Scopus and Web of Science count only their curated journal sets and give lower, more conservative figures. None is "wrong" — always state which database you used.

When you present your impact, pair the h-index with something it cannot capture: your three most significant papers and why they mattered, your role in each, and any real-world use of your findings. Choosing the right journal

The most common reason for desk rejection is not weak science. It is sending a good paper to the wrong journal. Scope fit beats impact factor every time.

Work through these in order

1. Scope

Read the journal's aims and scope, then skim its last two issues. Has it published work like yours recently? If nothing resembles your paper, no amount of quality will save it from a desk rejection.

2. Audience

Who needs to read this — clinicians, methodologists, policymakers? Choose the journal those people actually subscribe to, not the one with the biggest name.

3. Indexing

Check the databases that matter for your career — Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, TR Dizin. Verify indexing on the database's own site, never on the journal's claims about itself.

4. Speed and cost

Compare time to first decision and the article processing charge against your deadline and budget. Many journals publish both figures; ask the editorial office if they don't.

Inside the peer review process

Peer review feels like a black box from the outside. It isn't — it is a fairly predictable sequence, and knowing it makes the waiting much easier.

Editorial triage

An editor checks scope, format and ethics, usually within days. Roughly half of all desk rejections happen here, and most are about fit, not quality.

Reviewer selection

The handling editor invites specialists in your topic. Finding two who accept can take weeks — this is normally the slowest stage.

Review

Reviewers assess novelty, method, evidence and clarity, then recommend a decision. At Zeus journals this is double-blind: neither side sees the other's identity.

Decision

The editor weighs the reports — they advise, they do not vote — and issues the decision, typically 21 days from submission at our journals.

Waiting is normal: two to four months to first decision is common across academic publishing. A polite status enquiry after eight weeks is entirely acceptable.
